The residents were
told the mine would never operate again, The equipment was shipped to other
mines in Texas. Many years of intense reclamation work was done. The mine was
then supposedly sold for a song to a private individual and was to be developed
into residential parcels. Coaldale had ceased to be a mining community.
During the almost twenty years the mine has been closed many new residents
have moved in. These people are not miners. They moved here because of the
incredible beauty of this valley, its offerings of tranquility, water sports, camping,
mountain hiking, and the arts. They moved here for quality of life.
Holcim will damage that quality of life. The following are just some of the ways
that damage will occur:
• Increased traffic at the dangerous intersection of CR6 & Hwy 50; and by
Post Office exit, daily placing lives at risk.
Increase in slow heavy truck traffic on Hwy 5o through the narrow
Bighorn Sheep Canyon.
• Disruptions for the ~50,00o annual visitors to the Upper Arkansas
Headwaters State Park that runs along Hwy 5o through Bighorn Sheep
Canyon.
• Added risks to school children and school busses walking and traveling
along the proposed haul route from the Quarry through Coaldale, then
through the almost thirty miles of State Park in the canyon.
• Potential traffic impediment to fire and emergency vehicles.
• Increased road damage on CR6 & Hwy 5o to Canon City. Fremont County
is already declaring they have no monies for road maintenance.
