Species Diversity (Density)
A full accounting of all plant species encountered within each of the areas sampled for
cover was compiled. In addition, cover data were used to calculate fhe species density
(mean number of species present per unit area) of each sampled area.
Species presence was noted within the area one meter to either side of the transect (50
m x 2 m = 100 mZ). These presence data along with point-intercept data were used to
produce values for species density expressed on a per-100 sq.m. basis.
Species Nomenclature
Scientific names used fallow Weber and Wittman (1996), common names cited are
found in Beetle (1970), Nickerson et al. (1976), or Soil Conservation Service (1979).
Cross reference to the substantially revised scientific nomenclature for the flora of
Western Colorado, as set forth by Weber and Wittman (2001), may be determined by
reference to Weber and Wittman (1992).
During the course of the fieldwork, a list of all encountered plant species (quantitative
plus incidental observations) was compiled for each reclamation area and the reference
area. These lists are summarized in Appendix 2, Table 12, Species Present -
Reclaimed and Reference Areas, which includes current nomenclature and cross
references to older nomenclature.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Cover
Total herbaceous vegetation cover in the reference area samples averaged 52.3
percent. The performance standard would be 90 percent of the approved reference
area mean and hence 47.1 percent (= 52.3 x 0.9). Parcels 003, HG8 and E all
exceeded this level (Table 9). In the slump area, total herbaceous vegetation cover
averaged 42 percent. Hence total herbaceous vegetation cover in the slump area did
not reach the standard for herbaceous cover set by the reference area.
3
