~~-
Ms. Janet Binns
Reclamation Specialist
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
215 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 802032273
RE: Grazing Plan for Minor Revision 06 -Colorado Coal Mine #1 (PermR No. C•~61-
024)
Dear Ms. Binns:
Kaiser Resources, Inc. hereby submits the plans to implement a cattle grazing program
at the Colorado Coal Mine #1 during the spring Of 1995 to assist in the developmerFt of
warm season grasses on the reclaimed area. We feel that this tool will help achieve the
Phase II and III diversity standard for the site revegetation criteria. This submittal is
required as a resuR of approval of Minor Revision 08.
Grazing would occur from approximately April 15 to June 1 (depending upon stocking
rate) to utilize the dominant cool season grasses which exist on the ske. Mr. Don M~~rtin
of the Soil Conversation Service (SCS) in Walsenburg met Mr. Jerry Koblitz on the site
and conducted an evaluation to determine the stocking rate and duration Of grazincl. k
was estimated that there is approximately 400 pounds per acre of forage available at the
ske in its current condition. Given that there is approximately 140 acres of use~i~ble
pasture and that a cow will eat approximately 25 pounds per day, Kaiser propose:;; to
stock 140 head of cattle fora 15 day period. Depending upon the availability of cattt~a in
the area, Kaiser may stock a lower number for a longer period.
A qualitative vegetation survey will be conducted during the summer of 1995 to assess
the presence of warm season grasses and determine the success of the prognsm.
Results will be reported to the Division following the summer survey. Specifics including
duration of grazing and stocking rate will also be presented In the report.
Should you have questions or need additional information concerning our gra!:ing
program, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Mike Keegan or let me know.
Sincerely,
~ ~~
Jerry .
