III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
A~IINOR REVISION 29
Coors Energy Company (Coors) has recently experienced both production and quality
problems with its domestic water supply well, Permit No. 24650-F. This well was drilled
in 1980, during the initiation of operations at the Keenesburg Mine, and now provides all
of the domestic use, dust control, livestock and irrigation (to the extent there is a need and
use) water at the site. The well has begun to exhibit characteristics similar to another
Laramie-Fox ITills formation well (Permit No. 24651-F) which was drilled at the same
time as this well, and had to be plugged and abandoned about five years ago. A video
camera lowered into the well has disclosed severe corrosion of the plain casing and
plugging of the screened sections with formation sand. It was determined that the severity
of the corrosion to the plain casing was such that attempts to acid treat the well (to clean
up the screened section and improve the production capacity) would likely result in a total
collapse.
Faced with the potential loss of the site's only water supply source, Coors has engaged the
services of a well driller and a geologist to provide technical expertise concerning the
drilling and completion operations, and has applied to the Colorado Division of Water
Resources for a permit to replace the existing well with a new one, to be located
approximately thirty feet away. Verbal approval has been received from the Division of
Water Resources to proceed with drilling operations (receipt of the final permit
documentation usually takes four to six weeks).
Coors presently plans to reconnect the existing water system to the new well as soon as
drilling and completion operations are concluded and it is possible to transfer piping and
equipment from one well to the other. No other change to the water system is anticipated.
A copy of the well permit document will be furnished to the Division as it becomes
available.
This Ivfinor Revision is submitted by Coors as a matter of information to the Division.
When the new, or revised well permit number is available from the Division of Water
Resources, item 3 on page 31 of the 5/96 Permit Application document will be adjusted to
reflect this information.
MR-29 2/97
