BANTA, Director C ~~ '.l / ~\,
DATE: November 9, 1989
T0: Eastside Mine (C-84-063) TR-06 File
FROM: Bill Crick
Eastside has requested a Small-Area Exemption at the proposed loadout location
at Rifle, Colorado. After viewing the site a USLE calculation was performed
to estimate sediment production. The site is virtually flat, the long
dimension is 450 feet parallel to the tracks, and the area is 28,575 square
feet (0.66 acre). The following factors were used:
R = 35 (from isoerodent map of Colorado)
K = 0.4 (rough estimate from fiq. 3, SCS Tech. Note 50)
LS = 0.13 (450' slope, 0.3 to 0.4 per cent slope)
C = 1.0 (typical for construction sites)
P = 1.0 (typical for construction sites)
The equation indicates 1.82 tons/acre/year of sediment production, or 1.2
tons/year. This would amount to just over 1 cubic yard of sediment. The very
low slope would encourage deposition of much of the sediment before leaving
the site, so this is probably a very conservative estimate. Since the
operator will not 'store-coal at the loadout and has committed to clean up any
spilled coal, I recommend ap`prova`of the exemption.
WBC/yjb
1190E
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
