• March 2000 -5- 993-2099.150
As part of the Phase N design, a water balance was conducted to determine the volume of
solution that will be generated as a result of the additional Phase N area. The water balance
model included the existing Phase I and Phase II PSSA's and the new Phase N PSSA. The
water balance model accounted for normal operating volume, solution accumulation due to
seasonal climatic vaziations to a 95 percent confidence interval, 12-hour draindown during
pump outages, and excess water during exVeme climatic conditions (100-year, 24-hour storm
event), while maintaining the minimum freeboard of five feet for the Phase II and Phase N
PSSA's. As in Amendment No. 7, three feet of freeboard will be maintained for the Phase I
PSSA.
Operational and post~losure surface water diversion systems have been designed around the
perimeter of the VLF. The operational Phase N diversion channel will be constructed along
the margins of the VLF. During the construction and operation of the Phase N VLF,
temporary surface water diversion channels also will be constructed to route surface water
flow away from disturbed areas, as needed. The diversion system has been sized to route
storm water from portions of the mine areas and VLF to the Bateman Creek drainage. The
post-closure surface water diversions are located along the margins of the reclaimed VLF
slopes. Permanent surface water diversion channels have been sized to divert upgradient
surface water generated from the 100-year, 24-hour storm event.
1.2 Scope of Work
The purpose of Golder Associate's Inc. (Golder) work, reported herein, was to provide
CC&V with engineering services for the design of Phase N. This document supports the
engineering design and CC&V's permitting activities. This document includes the
following:
LJ
1:\99Q099\FINAL REPORT]W9MAIN:.DOC Golder Associates
