In 1979, density dif- <br />ferences were non-significant between mixtures; and only the <br />excelsior mulch resulted in treatment means significantly <br />greater than the control for both mixtures. In 1978, xeric <br />mixture production was significantly higher than the mesic <br />mixture for the excelsior and hydromulch treatments; the xeric <br />hydromulch and mesic excelsior treatment means were signifi- <br />cantly higher than the control means. In 1979, the xeric <br />mixture production was significantly higher than mesic produc- <br />tion over all mulches; the xeric mixture showed a significant <br />differential response to mulch (hydromulch > excelsior > <br />control); the mesic mixture showed no significant differences <br />among mulch treatments, This analysis indicates that xeric <br />species were better adapted to site conditions than mesic <br />species, and that mulches were more beneficial to xeric <br />species than to mesic species production during the second <br />grawiag season, <br />3.5 Revegetatioa Species Performance - Shrub Transplants <br />3.5.1 Containerized Transplants <br />Of a total of 32 containerized plants transplanted into the refuse <br />material on level plots, 3 serviceberry, 1 mountain mahogany, and 1 bit- <br />terbrush survived the second growing season, resulting in 16~ survival. <br />Increases is height during 1979 were 1-3® for the serviceberry plants; <br />5® for the mountain mahogany, and 9 ® for the bitterbrush. All plants <br />consisted of single stems. Locations and heights of surviving trans- <br />plants are presented in Appendix D-1. <br />Of a total of 32 transplanted in topsoiled level plots, Ob survived <br />the second growing season. These second year data indicate that exten- <br />sive mortality occurred between 1978 and 1979, and was most significant <br />on the topsoiled plots. <br />Two mountain mahogany transplants (1 in hydromulch, 1 in excelsior) <br />in the west 2:1 slopes survived the second growing season. Three living <br />mountain mahogany plants were recorded is 1978. <br />42 <br />
