Canopy cover oa 2:1 slopes is significantly higher oa north as
compared to south for all treatments; there were no significant dif-
•, ferences among mulches within aspects.
Production on 2:1 north slopes treatments vas significantly higher
than in any south slope treatment, a result consistent with cover and
density data. On the south 2:1 slope, the production with hydromulch
vas significantly higher than with either the control or excelsior,
which were not different £rom each other. This response pattern is
consistent with the 1978 results. Oa the north aspect, production under
ezcelsior vas significantly greater than Lhat for the control, but was
not different from hydromulch. Important differences in response to
,mulch are not apparent on this aspect.
On 4:1 south slopes, density vas non-significant with respect to
mulch treatment; on 4:1 north slopes, densities wader all three mulch
treatments were significantly different: straw > control > excelsior.
these north slope density data suggest that greater seedling mortality
occurred under excelsior than on the relatively unprotected control and
stray plots. This observation is based oa the fact that the excelsior
•1 treatment contained the largest seedling population when density was
~, measured in 1978. It is possible that the excelsior mat fibers soaked
up light amounts of precipitation which then evaporated. As a conse-
quence, near surface moisture may have been lover under excelsior than
other treatments after light shovers. This hypothesis vas also offered
to explain low near-surface soil moisture under ezcelsior plots (Sec-
tion 3.2.3). With the exception of the excelsior treatment, north slope
plots shoved significantly higher densities than south slope plots.
Canopy cover vas significantly higher oa north 4:1 slopes than
south 4:1 slopes. Cover differences were non-significant across mulches
on south slopes; cover wader straw and excelsior were both significantly
higher than the control on the north slope.
Annual production was significantly higher on north slopes than
south slopes. Mulch was non-significant for the south aspect; straw >
ezcelsior > control oa the north aspect_
In summary, second year. results suggest that aspect is a more
important controlling factor than mulch treatment on 2:1 slopes. This
~~ observation is supported by the large differential in planted species
~: ,
31
