EXECUTIVE SUMHARY
The following report presents the results of second year measure-
ments on soil temperature and moisture, and seeded plant growth on the
tlt. Gunnison Hine Reclamation study plots.
Precipitation was abundant on the site during the winter and
- spring, providing excellent spring growing conditions. A dry summer
sent plants into dormancy by the end of July. Hesic mixture species
_ declined markedly between 1978 and 1979, resulting in seeding failures
on nearly all mesic south aspect plots. Xeric species showed better
adaptation to all slope aspects and slope angles. Pubescent wheatgrass
and crested wheatgrass performed best among xeric species. Haximum
production was recorded fora xeric drill straw treatment oa a 4:1 north
slope. Eaperimeatal species production was much higher as north aspects
under mulches regardless of slope angle.
Containerized transplants declined from 47°L survival in 1918 oa
level topsoiled plots to 0,~, in 1979; transplants declined from 44$
survival on level refuse plots to 16x survival in 1979. Ho local trans-
plants were alive is 1979.
1
i

11
