The road width increase will be on the order of about four (4)
feet. (Please refer to the two attached figures, for location and
construction details).
The section of road in question is simply to narrow, especially in the
winter months, to guarantee the safety of men and equipment utilizing
the road. It is imperative that the road be widened now.
The outslope of the road section to be widened currently slopes at
about 1.5:1 (horizontal to vertical) down to the North Fork Gunnison
River. In order to maintain the current stability of the slope and to
eliminate any environmental harm to the river, it is proposed to place
an approximate two (2) foot vertical retaining wall consisting of an
old mine car on the outslope in order to gain the four (4) feet of
additional road width required as shown on the attached typical cross
section. As in the case when the road was constructed, the fill
material used will not contain any coal and will consist of minus six
(-6) inch material compacted in continuous thin lifts.
Any damage to the reclaimed slope down slope from the road
construction will be promptly repaired by Bear Coal Company.
