Mount:
MAR 16 1992
Reciamined Land
ation pr,,;,,;,,~
I have toured the gravel mining operation (Permit No. M-87-
103) of the M. Sims Gravel Company in East Douglas Creek, Rio
Blanco County. I am concerned by the nature and location of this
operation in regard to both the original and amended boundaries.
At the present time, gravel is being mined from a steep
hillside and pushed over a cliff to the work area below.
Material and rip-rap from this operation is being stored
extremely close to an intermittent stream. I am worried that
runoff' during a high rainfall event would cause a large amount of
sediment to be deposited in East Douglas Creek. Landowners,
Division of Wildlife, and BLM in the area are at present trying
very hard to upgrade the East Douglas riparian system. Any
substantial increase in the sediment load could be extremely
detrimental to the progress already made.
I would very much like to see a burm constructed along the
intermittent stream and Rio Blanco County Road 27 to trap the
runoff' from the mined area. Some of the runoff could even be
channeled northward on the west side of the county road allowing
any sediment to settle out before Pinding its way into the creek.
Also, I would like to suggest that in the future the
reclamation plans Por gravel pits such as this include some type
of native woody vegetation. This is very important in areas like
East Liouglas Creek that act as winter range Por a large number oP
deer. I do understand that there is very little that can be done
with this mine as the reclamation plan has already been approved.
Sinc rely ~~~ L~/J /J~
Hark W.
