• INTRODUCTION
A cultural resources inventory of two proposed drill kolas (1P2 and ;i3)
and their related new and to-be-upgraded access roads was conducted on pri-
vate lands and lands administered by the National Forest on 22 July 1982
for West Elks Coal Company, Inc. at the request of the Office of Surface
Yining and the U.S.D.A. coyest Service. The survey was effected in compli-
ante with Executive Order 11593, the National Envircnmental Policy Act of
1969, and the National Historic Preservation Act of t966. Fieldwork was
performed by Carl E. Conner, Project Archaeologist, of Grand River ;Insti-
tute.
LOCATION OF STUDY AREA
The following are legal descriptions of the proposed drill locations
and access roads, grouped by their relative surface ownership (see Figure t):
1. Drill hole 112:
T.13S., R.90W., Sec. 16 SEcSWyNE~SW~, 6th P.f4. (Private)
Access, approximately 2500' to-be-upgraded:
• T.135., R.90W., Sec. t6 SWyNEzSWc, N}SWySW~, S}NW~SWc and
Sec. 17 EiNE~SEi, bth P.M. (Private).
2. (USFS)
Access, approximately 4250' new road construction:
T.13S., R.90W., Sec. 16 SEw, 6th P.M. (Private)
Access to the study area is gained by traveling east of Paonia along
the Minnesota Reservoir/Hammond Trail road. The study area lies approxi-
mately two miles north of Minnesota Reservoir, and west of Sylvester Gulch.
EP]VIRONMENTAL OVERVIEW
The study area lies at the periphery of the West Elk Mountains along
the north and east sides of a north-trending ridge at elevations of bet•~een
7400 and 7800 feet. Slope ranges between 3° and 18°. Water resources in-
clude several springs within a one-mile radius and the headwaters of
•
r
