ABSTRACT
• A cultural resources inventory of two proposed drill hole locations
(lk2 and Ik3) and their related new and to-be-upgraded access roads located
on private land and lands administered by the National Forest in the Syl-
vester Gulch area was conducted by Grand River Institute personnel for
West Elks Coal Company, Inc. of Sommerset, Colorado. The study area is
located in T.13S., R.90W., Sections 16 and 21, 6th P.M. in Gunnison County,
Colorado. Study areas in Section 21 are within the Gunnison National For-
est and were surveyed under Special Use Permit No. 305-82 and by authority
of a letter of authorization issued by the District Ranger of the Paonia
Ranger District on 22 July 1982. The lands in Section 16 are privately
owned and are herein reported to satisfy requirements of the Office of
Surface Mining. A search of the Colorado Archaeological Site Inventory,
the Colorado Inventory of Historic Sites, and nominations pending or on
the National Register produced no known archaeological and/or historical/
architectural resources within the study area, although sites are recorded
within .5 mile of the proposed project. A 100% pedestrian survey of the
study area was performed by Carl E. Conner, Project Archaeologist, on
22 July 1982. The survey covered approximately 30 acres. No cultural re-
sources were identified and no further consideration of cultural resources
need be given the surface extent of this project.
Carl E.
