Kaldenbach, Tom
From: Kaldenbach, Tom
Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2007 1:47 PM
To: 'Barbe, Henry'
C/98oo07 ~~
ri~l.e -338
Subject: RE: West Elk Mine (C-80-007), MR-338, Geotechnical holes on Deer Shaft Pad
Thank you Henry. Your response takes care of my questions. -Tom
From: Barbe, Henry [mailto:HBarbe@archcoal.com]
Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2007 11:01 AM
To: Kaldenbach, Tom
Cc: Nolte, Doug; Nyikos, Chris; Peacock, Michael J.
Subject: RE: West Elk Mine (C-80-007), MR-338, Geotechnical holes on Deer Shaft Pad
Tom: To be conservative I think we will use the run-off information for the 2.0 Acre Pad fora 10-year, 24-
hourevent to add to the mudpit volume (calculated to be.217 ac-ft ). The safety demonstration for the Shaft Pad,
I assume, for this Minor Revision that the mudpit will be incised in native soils not in fill soils as depicted in the
Safety Demonstration of TR-101, however, if the mudpit were to be placed on the fill, the construction of the
mudpit would need to be at least 10 feet away from the edge of the fill slope as depicted in the Safety
Demonstration of TR-101.
The mudpit may potentially be located on the pad, but, in native subsoil (the area was stripped of topsoil
prior to the construction of the pad). We will need the area for potential operations and as such, we would dry
the pit out replace subsoil and gravel the area. If we can Feld-fit the mudpit off of the pad and near the topsoil
pile, we would dry it put fill it with subsoil, re-grade to AOC, then seed, fertilize, and mulch the area. The seed mix
would be comprised of the seed species composition mutually agreed in our permit (PR-10) to both CDRMS and
USFS approval. Mulch could be certified weed-free straw ; or straw/aspen excelsior blankets.
I hope this answers your questions, if not, please call me.
From: Kaldenbach, Tom [mailto:tom.kaldenbach@state.co.us]
Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2007 10:27 AM
To: Barbe, Henry
Subject: West Elk Mine (C-80-007), MR-338, Geotechnical holes on Deer Shaft Pad
Henry,
The mudpit proposed in MR-338 will be an impoundment under the Rules. Are you relying on the safety
demonstration submitted in TR-101 for the mudpit ?
Is the reclamation plan for the mudipit, as follow: let the mudpit dry out, fill it with subsoil, regrade to AOC, then
seed the regraded area with a seed mix previously approved by DRMS. The mudpit area will be fertilized and
straw-mulched.
Tom
********** Email Disclaimer **********
The information contained in this a-mail, and in any
3/27/2007
