Seeding Rates
-a-
9. Due to the competitive and lasting ability of Yellow and White
Sweetclover and Smooth Brome (introduced species), the Coal program does not
generally allow these species. However, since the Minerals Program does use
these species, the following should be adhered to.
A. Keep yellow and white Sweetclover to a maximum of 10% - 15% of the
total seed misture but no more than 1.0 pound PLS/AC drilled rate or
2.0 pounds PLS/AC broadcast rate.
B. Keep smooth brome to a maximum of 10% of the total seed mixture in
moist or wet areas and to a maximum of 20% of the total seed mixture in
dry areas. This species is highly competitive and can easily dominate
the mixture if seeded in excess.
There are three formulas that will be used to determine seeding rates:
Where,
(A)(B) = C (1)
D/43560 = F (2)
C/F = G (3)
A = Seeding rate of 40 PLS/SQ. FT.
B = Percentage of seed mixture
C = Desired PLS/SQ. FT. for each species
D = Number of pure live seeds per pound
43560 = Square feet per acre
F = Number of PLS/SQ. FT. of pounds seeded
G = Pounds pure live seed per acre (PLS/AC)
Equation (2) can be disregarded if the "Number per Square Foot" column of
Appendix I is utilized.
The following example, utilizing Equations (1) and (3) and the values from
Appendix I for Equation (2), will clarify this discussion.
S ep cies
Percentage
of Mix
Number/
Square Foot**
TW Thickspike wheatgrass 20 4.3
NT Needle-and-thread 25 2.6
PS Prairie sandreed 25 6.3
SL Sand lovegrass 15 (less 15% to 13%) 34.4
LF Lewis flax 15 6.5
Equation (1) Calculations:
TW (40)(0.20) = 8.0
NT (40)(0.25) = 10.0
PS (40)(0.25) = 10.0
SL (40)(0.13) = 5.2
LF (40)(0.15) = 6.0
