4. The sludge spraying equipment was trailer mounted and
not readily movable by one person. Efforts to maintain
the dump surface while the equipment was in place created
more house keeping problems.
A. The first problem was that the pump area soon became
lower than the surrounding dump, thus creating
a pond of sewer sludge from the sprinkler
reversing men=hanism.
B. The second problem was that the eax•thmoving
equipment used for dump maintenance could not
effectively work the entire dump face which
ultimately resulted in soft spots where the spraying
equipment had been located.
5. Wind direction and velocity indicated a need for frequent
relocation of the spraying equipment. Hourly relocation
would have been required.
In summary, the sludge spray covers the dust very effectively.
Wind, dump height, sprayer configuration and restricted access to
all areas of the dump create problems.
Testing pr~;cedures .s re continuing with alternate methods of
dispersing the sewer sludge to overcome the above problems.
At this time the most effective method is. having the discharge
pipe on the dispensing truck arranged to extend approximately
foux• feet beyond tlxe left side of t!ie tru~~k. The truck moves
pax•allel to the edge of the dump as it dispenses the sludge. This
allows the sludge to run down the dump slopes and out over most
of the dust in the area.
Dust is currently bei:xg dumped over a higher part of the dust
dump area to decrease the maintenance requix•ements. This dump is
in a "U" shape to mitigate wind problems.
A spray nozzle capable of vertical movement secured to the
dispensing truck whir_h would move around the perimeter of the
dump is being considered.
A letter on this subject from Mr. Phil Hegeman of the Colorado
Department of Health to Mr. George Medaris of the Fremont
aanita+.ion District has been attached.
Sineerel
ay a'terson
Quarry Supervisor
