Specialist: Gary Curtiss
Location: Adams County, 1.5 Existing Bond:$125,25O
miles SW Brighton corporate surety
Reason For Hearing: Board consideration of amended application. Two
parties objections to the application.
Permit Summary: 06/12/95 Application for amendment to existing permit.
Ready Mixed has applied for a revision to make the following changes:
1. Add approx. 20 acres to permit, new total = 392.4 acres.
2. Change the mining method from wet mining only to a combination of wet
and dry mining. Dry mining will consist of dewatering from a dewatering
trench surrounding each mining phase.
3. The mining phases have been modified from 8 to 12 total.
4. The end land use will remain 'wildlife habitat' and an optional
alternative will be added to include creation of a sealed water storage
reservoir in place of unlined, open lakes.
Obiectors who have filed written obiectiona with the Division:
1. Adams County Department of Planning and Development
2. Maria Kesseler, nearby resident
3. Don Pfertsh, nearby resident
Obiection Tonics:
1. Objectors believe that if dry mining is approved, it will adversely
affect the alluvial wells in the ar1ea. c,/~ v(,~,~v ~./aSf~'aq D~~~`~O~
to a of Colorado has not, in the past, been responsive to citizen
complain- the damages to water wells from gravel mining
activities.
,d. Hit iga ages has been left up to the County and in some cases, the
/ generosity of t company.
Discussion:
Staff ie recommending conditional approval with one stipulation: 'The
operator will submit the engineering specifications for an optional
slurry wall-clay liner alternative in the form of an amendment to the
permit. The amendment must be approved by the Division before
installation is begun'.
The objectors are concerned that nearby shallow groundwater wells will be
adversely impacted from the proposed dewatering activities. The Division
believes this issue is more appropriately handled by the Office of the
State Engineer. The Division of Minerals and Geology only addresses
impacts where actual physical impact to the well(s) occur(s).
C:\YR57\87-049\BOARD.FRX
