Mr. Dan Matthemt
Drvirion ofMinerak end Geohq
Febroary 24, 2002
Page 2
Comment 2 - The Division requests that Seedmix #] be modified to reduce grass seed
component to approximately 30 seeds per square foot.
Response: SCC has modified Seedmix 1, as requested, to reduce the grass component to
approximately 30 seeds per square foot. A revised Table 22-1, Seed Mix 1, is attached.
Comment 3-The table on page 27 should be modified ro more accurately reflect the acres
anticipated for Seed Mix 6 over the entire II-WMine area.
Response: SCC has reviewed Exhibits 22-1 and 22-1A, Postmining Vegetation Map, and has
estimated that there will be approximately 78 acres where Seed Mix 6 will be used. The updated
table has been attached.
Comment ~ The Division requested that Seedmix 6 6e modified to include some low
competitive native forbs.
Response: As shown on Exhibit 22-1A, Postmining Vegetation Map, Seedmix 6 is always
supplemented by Seedmixes 1 or 2, which all contain native forbs. Therefore SCC doesn't believe
that additional forbs need to be included in Seedmix G.
Comment 5 -Division requests a commitment and plan detailing experimental live
transplanting ofmature shrub clumps.
Response: SCC has inserted a discussion of the "Mother Plant" approach for tall shrub species
into the text of Tab 22, Revegetation.
Comment 6 - "Mother Plant" approach for aspen -None of the detail from Buckner's
narrative on that requested byDMG was incorporated.
Response: Subsequent to the Division's review of SCC's July response to comments, SCC has
reevaluated the "Mother Plant" approach for aspen and has decided to pursue a test plot
experiment proposed by Dr. Wayne Shepperd. The text in Tab 22, Revegetation, has been revised
[o address and present the proposed approach.
Comment 7- "Mother Plant"for tall shrub 'species not addressed.
Response: SCC has inserted a discussion of the "Mother Plant" approach for tall shrub species
into the text of Tab 22, Revegetation.
Comment 8 - Altemadve Aspen Methods -letter states that Tab 22 has been revised to
include commitment for live topsoiling and live clump transplanting for aspen in li-W
Sourh....doesn'r appear to have been done.
Response: A commitment for limited live topsoiling and live clump (uee) transplanting has been
included in Tab 22. The opportunity presented itself and SCC conducted live topsoIl placement in
a portion of the "A" Pit reclaimed area during the fall of 2002. If the opportunity presents itself
again, SCC will conduct more live topsoil handling. However, SCC doesn't believe that further
commitment can be made at this time.
m:uwiu.m/.r...en ms'remno//taro/vwr xq..e
rr/u/oz
