mud bottoms and shallow banks are preferred. Usually not present in water sources with
predatory fish.
Northern Leopard Frog (Rata dens) The northern leopard frog inhabits riparian
areas, ponds, marshes, lakes and wet meadows. Wet areas with rooted aquatic vegetation
aze especially favored. Breeding takes place in shallow non-flowing bodies of water at
elevations up to 10500 feet. During summer, adults prefer grassy areas, wet meadows
and swampy azeas surrounding pools and marshes. Areas with 100% vegetative cover
are preferred. Frogs can cover large distances (3 miles) in dispersal and feeding range.
Feeds mostly on arthropods: beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, aphids, ants, spiders, flies,
caddisflies, etc. ).
Milk Snake (Lampropeltis trian rig him) The milk snake occurs in a wide variety of
habitats in Colorado including grasslands, sandhills, canyons and open stands of
ponderosa pine in the foothills, pinyon juniper woodland, and acid river valleys. Milk
snakes usually emerge from their subterranean winter retreats in April in eastern
Colorado; perhaps later in western Colorado. After emergence, milk snakes remain
active until September or October. This snake is a constrictor and eats a variety of
vertebrates, including small mammals, birds, lizazds, snakes, and bird and reptile eggs.
FISH
Colorado River Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhvnchus clarkipleuriticus). Stream habitats
with clear cold water, silt-free rocky substrate in riffles/runs, azeas of slow deep water,
well vegetated stream banks, abundant instream cover, relatively stable water flow and
temperature regimes. Lake habitat is clear, cold, deep. For reproduction, needs lake
tributary streams with gravel substrate in riffles.
PLANTS
Gunnison Milkvetch (Astrealus anisus) Found on dry gravelly flats and hillsides, in
sandy or clay soils overlying granitic bedrock; usually among or under low sagebrush;
7,500-8,500 feet elevation.
Molybdenum Milkvetch (Astr~aalus molvbdenus) Grows in tundra, subalpine
exposed sites above treeline, and calcerous scree slopes; 11,000 to 13,000 feet in
elevation.
Smooth Rockcress (Brava zlabella) Grows on alcerous substrates, scree slopes,
disturbed gravel soils; 12,000 to 12,300 feet in elevation.
