<br />provided it is first ascertained that the reagent is of sufficiently high purity <br />' to permit its use without lessening the accuracy of the determination, <br />' S.2 Reagent water. All references to reagent water in this method <br />refer to one of the following, as appropriate. <br />5.2.1 Inorganic Analytes: Water which is generated by any method <br />which would achieve the performance standards for ASTM Type II water. The <br />analyte(s) of concern must be no higher than the highest of either (1) the <br />detection limit, or (2) five percent of the regulatory level for that <br />' analyte, or (3) five percent of the measured concentration in the sample. <br />5.2.2 Volatile Analytes: Water in which an interferant is not <br />' observed at the method detection limit of the compounds of interest. <br />Organic-free water can be generated by passing tap water through a carbon <br />filter bed containing about 1 lb, of activated carbon. A water <br />' purification system may be used to generate organic-free deionized water. <br />Organic-free water may also be prepared by boiling water for l:i minutes. <br />Subsequently, while maintaining the temperature at 90•C, bubble a <br />contaminant-free inert gas through the water far 1 hour. The ,analyte(s) <br />' of concern must be no higher than the highest of either (1) the detection <br />limit, or (2) five percent of the regulatory level for that analyte, or <br />(3) five percent of the measured concentration in the sample. <br />' 5.2.3 Semivolatile Analytes: Water in which an interferant is <br />not observed at the method detection limit of the compounds of interest. <br />~~ Organic-free water can be generated by passing tap water through a carbon <br />'~ filter bed containing about 1 lb. of activated carbon. The fluid is used to determine <br />the leachability of soil from a site that is east of the Mississippi <br />' River, and the leachability of wastes and wastewaters. <br />NOTE: Solutions are unbuffered and exact pH may not be attained. <br />5.4.2 Extraction fluid q2: This fluid is made by ridding the <br />60/40 weight percent mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids to reagent water <br />' (Step 5.2) until the pH is 5.00 ± 0.05.
