Note: If large contracts are awazded to the site, production could increase to the permit
maximum, thereby shortening the life of the pit. On the other hand, if contracts are less than
anticipated, the life of the pit could be extended. This table is based on a reasonable projection of
average production rates.
3. Hydrologyand Sediment Control for Mining
The major hydrologic design item for this operation is to safely pass runoff from the irrigated pasture
land uphill from the operation to the west and north. The storm runoff will be controlled by a set of
ditches, isolation berms and two major storm water channels. The berms will allow the pit bottom to
serve as a sediment pond for all storm events within the permit area. If the surrounding watershed was
allowed to enter the site this would not be feasible. The diversion ditches provide the necessary
isolation by carrying all upstream runoff away from the site.
There are 5 ditches used for isolation. The collection ditches will be V-ditches of 1.5 feet depth and
2H:1 V side slopes cut out of the natural gravel. In most areas no lining will be needed due to the mild
slopes of the site. Where ditches encounter steep grades, arip-rap lining will be used. Ditch # 1
controls water entering into the South Pit from the west. The water from this ditch will be channeled
to the unnamed natural drainage to the southwest of the permit area. Ditch #2 drains the next most
northern area. Due to topography, the ditch will feed a pipe at its low point which will skirt above the
west cut slope of the well pad. This pipe will direct the runoff into the major drainage that will pass
Cugnini 12/03 6
