Cottony
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33,
Section 116, Pamgaph 4, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on March 20, 2007, an application to revise coal
mining operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine was considered complete for the purposes of filing. The revision was
submitted by Bowie Resources, LLC. All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and the Regulations
initiate from this date of filing.
In Technical Revision No. 47, Bowie Resources LLC is proposing to construct a ventilation shaft site and increase
the permit area by 19.2 acres. The proposed shaft site is located immediately west of Hubbard Creek and on
USDA-Forest Service land, about 0.3 miles north of where the USDA-Forest Service boundary crosses Hubbard
Creek road. The proposed site would consist of a ventilation shaft without a fan, several portable trailers, and
possibly an escape hoist with a standby generator and fuel tank. Access would be off of Hubbazd Creek road.
Portions of the site would be within 100 feet of Hubbard Creek and most of the site would be within 100 feet of the
outside right of way of the Hubbard Creek road.
The proposed shaft would be 18 feet in diameter, 600 feet deep and lined with gout, except possibly where there
is solid rock. The proposed new surface disturbance would amount to 1.2 acres. The sediment control system for
the shaft site includes a sediment pond. The shaft and shaft site would be reclaimed after use.
The underground coal mining operation is on land located approximately 5 miles Northeast of Paonia, Colorado.
The permit area is further described as follows:
Portions of Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 1Q l 1, 14, 15, 16, and 22, Township 13 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
Portions of Sections 33 and 34, Township 12 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
The above-mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle map of Bowie.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver ~ Grand Iunuion Durango Active and Inactive Mines
