The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division proposes to approve an
application for a permit revision (PR-O1) to the existing permit to
conduct coal mining and reclamation operations submitted by the
Colowyo Coal Company for the Colowyo Mine. The proposed permit
revision includes plans to increase the permit area by
approximately 1920 acres and to add three new surface pits to the
mining plan.
The Colowyo Mine is located in Moffat and Rio Blanco counties,
approximately 28 miles south of Craig, Colorado. The mine is a
surface mine with an anticipated maximum annual production capacity
of five million tons per year. The coal to be mined is federally
and state owned. The surface area to be affected is federally,
state and privately owned. The revised permit area encompasses
approximately 7443 acres. The legal description i.s as follows:
T4N, R93W, 6th P.M., all or portions of Sections 12, 13,
15, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 33 and 34.
T3N, R93W, 6th P.M., all or portions of Sections 2, 3,
4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21 and 22, as
described more completely on page 2.03-15 of the Colowyo
Mine permit application.
This proposed approval is based on a finding that the proposed
operation will comply with all requirements of the Colorado Surface
Coal Mining Reclamation Act, C.R.S. 43-33-101, et sea., and the
regulations promulgated thereunder.
Copies of the proposed decision are on file for public inspection
at the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, Room 215,
Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street, Denver, Colorado 80203
and at the Moffat County court house in Craig, Colorado. Persons
with an interest that may be adversely affected by the proposed
decision may request a formal hearing before the Mined Land
Reclamation Board on the proposed decision. Such request must be
made in writing within thirty (30) days of the initial publication
of this notice, must be in writing, and must state with reasonable
specificity the reasons for the request and the objections to the
proposed decision. Requests for hearing should be submitted to the
Mined Land Reclamation Division at the address above.
