• 2.0 SITE DESCRIPTION
The BMRI San Luis Project is located on the western flank of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains,
approximately 4 miles northeast of the town of San Luis, in Costilla County, Colorado. The
topography of the site is steep and rugged mountainous terrain, with slopes ranging from
7 percent in the valleys to 20 percent along the ridges. The average elevation of the site is
8,600 feet above mean sea level (amsl). Annual average precipitation and evaporation at the San
Luis site aze approximately 12 inches (Benson, 1997) and 40 inches (Midwest, 1990),
respectively.
2.1 West Pit Post-Mining Hydrogeology
The post-mining existing hydrogeology and the hydrologic model for the backtilled West Pit are
presented in a previously prepared report titled "TR-26 Water Management in the West Pit Area,
San Luis Project, Costilla County, Colorado" (BMRI, 1999).
Generally, outflow from the backfilled West Pit results in elevated concentrations of sulfate
• manganese, floride, and TDS down-gradient from the pit. The purpose of this report is to present
a design for construction of a spray evaporation system that effectively lowers the water level in
the backfilled West Pit.

Ba11(e ,Lfountain Resources. /nc.
