r <br />71--Midway clay loam, 3 to 15 percent slopes. This shallow, well drained soil is on <br />ridges and knolls of the plains. It formed in residuum derived dominantly from shale. The <br />native vegetation is mainly grasses. Elevation is 5,100 to 5,600 feet. The average annual <br />precipitation is 1 ] to 13 inches, the average annual air temperature is 51 to 53 degrees f, and the <br />avergate frost-free period is 150 to 170 days. <br />Typically, the surface layer is light yellowish brwon clay loam about 3 inches thick. The <br />upper 6 inches of the substratum is clay. The lower part to a depth of 16 inches of the substratum <br />is clasy. The lower part to a depth of 16 inches is extremely shaly clay. Highly fractured, <br />wethered clay shale is a t a dpeth of 16 inches. The soil is moderatley alkaline. <br />Included in this unit is about 5 percent moderatley deep Gaynor silty clay loam and 5 <br />percent deep Limon silty clay loam on foot slopes. Also inlcuded is about 5 percent Shingle <br />loam on small areas with a thin cap of siltstone residuum over shale. The Shingle soil is less <br />clayey than this Midway soil. A delineation of this unit in the south central part of Sec. 23, T. 18 <br />S., R. 68 W. Includes an area about 60 acres in size of shaly Badlan with widely scattered <br />Gambel oak, ponderosa pine, pinyon, nad juniper. <br />Permeability of his Midway soil is slow. Available water capacity is very low. Effective <br />rooting depth is 6 to 20 inches. Runoff' is medium to rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is <br />moderate to high. <br />This unit is used for rnageland. A few, small areas are included in irriggated hayland or <br />pastureland. This soil is poorly suited to tilage and crop procudtion. <br />The potential plant community on this anti is mainly alkali sacaton, blue grama, galleta, <br />ans western wheatgrass. The averag annual production of air-dry vegetation is about X50 pounds <br />per azec. If the condition of the range deteriorates, galleta, greasewood, winterfat, westem <br />wheargrass, fourwing slatbush, and frank bush increase. The main liminatation for seeding are <br />very shallow wetting and high riunoff durign most storms and the poor filth of the thin topsoil. <br />Range pitting is suitable where slope is about 10 percent or less. <br />This unit is poorly suited to homesite development. The main limitations are shallow <br />depth of shale, high shrink-swell potential, and shlow permeablity of the soil. <br />This map unit is in capabity subcalls Vie, non-irrigated. It is in the Shaly Plains #46 <br />range site. <br />72--Midway-Cascajo complex, 10 to 40 percent slopes. This map unit is on moderately <br />sloping to steep ridges, knobs, hills, and edges of fan terraces deeply dissected by streams. The <br />native vegetation is mainly grasses, cactus, and scattered pinyon andjuniper. Elevation is 5,300 <br />to 6,500 feet. The average annual precipitation is 12 to 15 inches, the average annual air <br />temperature is 50 to 53 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 150 to 165 days. <br />This unit is about 60 percent Midway soil and about 20 percent Cascajo soil. The <br />midway soil occurs mainly on steeper side slopes. The Cascajo soil occurs mainly on knobs and <br />hills and along crests of terrace edges. <br />Included in this unit is about 10 percent Kim loam on terraces, tops of hills, and foot <br />slopes. Also included are small areas of shale outcrop on steeper side slopes and about 10 <br />percent soils shallow or moderately deep to shale bedrock and otherwise similar to the Cascajo <br />soil. <br />
