SUN COAL COMPANY
'~ 10200 WEST 44TH AVENUE, #120
WHEAT RIDGE, CO 80033
(303) 422-8064
June 12, 1991
Ms. Anne Ihlenfeldt
Industrial Enforcement Engineer
Permits and Enforcement Section
Water Quality Control Division
4210 East 11th Avenue
Denver, CO 80220-3716
RE: Reported Violation for CDPS Permit No. COG-850012,
Routt County Jan 1-Mar 31, 1991
Dear Ms. Ihlenfeldt:
The oil and grease of 200 Mg/1 at outfa11001 on 4-15-91 was 10. on 5-10-91, -1.
on 3-28-90,-1 on 4-6-90, 1. on 10-29-90.
Outfall 001 does not show a violation pattern for oil and grease as shown on the
enclosed water analysis reports for the 1990=91 period.
The mine was closed in 1982 and reclaimed in 1983 and 1984.
Outfall 001 is within a few feet of the only access road south from Highway 40
across Eilts' ranch and the Yampa river bridge. The road is primarily used by
the rancher and oil service personnel to haul crude and service oil and gas wells
to the south.
We suspect there was either a deliberate or accidental spill of oil in the drainage
or pond. We have experienced sabotage in the past.
We will continue to monitor our dry outfalls in compliance with our CDPS and
MLRD permits and search the area for any evidence of surface oil.
Sincerely,
i er~
Bryan J. Archer, Manager
Sun Coal Company
fJP
