Phil Jensen
• 9 Oct 97
Page 7 of 18 Pages
is present on the north side.
The Development waste pile is dominated by a thick stand of Basin wildrye. Cover is very good
with diverse species present among the wildrye. Species noted on the development waste pile
include: Basin wildrye, Kentucky bluegrass, Japanese brome, Yarrow, sagebrush, Cicer
milkvetch, Stickseed, an occasional Canada thistle, Creeping red fescue, Threadleaf daisy, and
Louisiana sagewort. This list is not all inclusive but represents a list of species visually observed
during the inspection.
The development waste pile topsoil stockpile footprint area vegetation looks very similaz to that
on the Development Waste Pile. Additional species noted on the former topsoil stockpile area
include Lupine and Rubber rabbitbrush. Live vegetative cover and litter aze so dense in this azea
that baze ground could not be discerned. A lazge burrow was encountered, which appeazed lazger
than a rabbit den. No evidence what animal was using the den. Elk scat and beds were
encountered throughout the reclaimed areas.
Rienau No. 2 Mine azea west of highway 13 had a matwe diverse grass dominated stand
established. In spite of some azeas of very steep slopes, tilling and gullying was not evident. A
• small amount of down cutting in the drainage at the center of the site had occurred in the past.
However, this old rill was well vegetated and no longer active. Recent water development work,
routing a spring to a stock tank, has occurred on the southern portion of this pazcel and a narrow
strip has been redistwbed. This azea has been seeded and mulched. Evidence was observed of
perennial vegetation becoming established on this redistwbed area.
The East side of the Rienau No. 2 Mine includes two reclaimed ponds. These ponds were
reconfigwed in the Fall of 1996. This is the first growing season since this work was performed.
A thick stand of bazley has been established as a nwse crop, on the reclaimed pond banks.
Perennial grasses and clover is becoming established below the Barley cover. No evidence of
tilling on the outslopes could be located in spite of the heavy precipitation the site has received
this summer.
The Landowner, Mr. Jensen expressed concern over the Basin wildrye. This species is
recommended for critical azea plantings by the US NRCS (formerly Soil Conservation Service).
This is a recommended rangeland species and is reported to be very palatable as a forage in early
Spring. This species is preferred by cattle and horses and less utilized by sheep. This species
was included in the reclamation seedmix with no request to remove it from the seedmix prior to
reclamation.
Encloswe 2
