March 1998 Slump /nvestigation and Mitigation Report ~ Page 10
5.0 SUMMARY OF SLUMP INVESTIGATION
The field investigation suggested that the probable cause of the slump is a weak bond between
the emplaced fill and the underlying completely weathered bedrock. The fill/bedrock contact
is at a sufficient angle to allow slippage. Additionally, introduction of water along the contact,
probably from precipitation at the ground surface, has acted as a lubricant. The slump appears
to have moved up to 20 feet based upon its apparent original location. Movement markers
along the top of the slump emplaced in 1995 have indicated slight movement since their
installation. Based on Varnes' classification of slumps (Varnes, 1978), this slump is considered a
debris slump with a rotational block component. It is possible that further movement of the
slump could occur in the future unless additional stabiliza[ion measures are implemented.
Montgomery Watson Americas •P.O.
