Dept. of Na!unl Reso~~rces <br />The Rockcastle Company <br />Grassy Creek Coal Mine #1 <br />Your file #78-45 <br />As you know, the Rockcastle Company has taken significant steps to comply <br />with applicable state and federal regulations. In order to assure that <br />topsoil was salvaged during the road improvement phase, Raye & Associates <br />conducted field studies and prepared a soils report on this phase of their <br />• operation. A copy of the soils report is enclosed for your review. <br />We also prepared an "Operating Mine Environmental Checklist" to assist the <br />mine manager to comply with state and federal regulations. This checklist <br />is specific to the Rockcastle Company Grassy Creek Coal Mine #1. A copy of <br />the checklist is enclosed for your review and we would also welcome any <br />comments you may have regarding its contents and effectiveness in meeting <br />applicable regulations. <br />Further, we prepared a letter to Hamlett Barry (dated June 22, 1979) re- <br />questing approval of a technic revision to permit #78-45. The letter <br />stated that correspondence from t e-~ landowner requesting that no shrubs <br />or trees be transplanted would be forwarded to your office upon receipt. <br />The original of Mr. Servatius' letter to the Rockcastle Company making <br />this request is also enclosed. For completeness, a copy of our letter of <br />June 22, 1979, to Hamlett Barry is attached to the Servatius letter. <br />If I can answer any questions on the enclosures, please feel free to call. <br />I assume that you will present the technical revision to the Board at its <br />July meeting.
