• III II111111111111N •
999
EXHIBIT G
WATER RESOURCES
The Mesa Gravel Pit is located approximately 4.5 miles southeast of Hayden, Colorado in
Routt County. The site is located 0.8 miles south of Highway 40, 0.7 miles west of
Twenty-Mile Road, and 3 miles northwest of the Seneca II Mine. The surface of the
Permit Area slopes at a low angle generally to the north. Surface relief is approximately
70 feet. The eastern portion of the permit area is drained by an unnamed ephemeral
stream that is tributary to Sage Creek. Sage Creek joins the Yampa River about 1.5
miles to the northwest of the permit area. The western portion of the permit area is
drained by an ephemeral stream that is part of the Hutchinson Gulch drainage.
Hutchinson Gulch joins the Yampa River about 2.5 miles north of the Permit Area.
The gravel deposit to be mined is an elevated terrace well above the current level of the
Yampa River. There is an average of about 20 inches of topsoil and about 6 feet of sand
and sandy clay overburden overlying the gravel deposit. The gravel deposit ranges from
• 7 to over 20 feet in thickness. Underlying the gravel deposit are shales of the Cretaceous
Lewis Formation. These shales, as identified in drillhole logs, are high in clay content and
appear to be of low permeability as evidenced by their sticky and slightly plastic
consistency when wet.
Exhibit G-1 illustrates the location of adjudicated water resource feature within and
adjacent to the permit area as of July 1, 1981. Table G-1 identifies all these water
resource features. Table G-1A updates the water rights listing though March 3, 1998.
Water sources in the mine vicinity are principally springs, although there is one
adjudicated water supply well located in the SE1/4 of Section 18 (T6N, R87W). The
Mesa gravel well located in the NW1/4 SE1/4 of Section 18 is not adjudicated. As
indicated in Table G-1, there are several reservoirs and one ditch in the general vicinity of
the Permit Area. The only water rights within the Permit Area are for Spring A and Spring
B (Map Numbers 16 and 17) located on Hutchinson Gulch and the Mesa Gravel Pit
sedimentation pond located on the unnamed tributary of Sage Creek. These springs are
located outside of the area to be mined.
r1
ILJ
G-1 Revised May 1998
