Lochhead
E~ecuhve Director
Michael B. Long
Division Director
I reviewed Enron's responses to our adequacy questions, related to changing the
revegetation success standards. Their responses are appropriate and I recommend we
approve the revision.
I also looked at the proposed seed mix Enron gave you for the reclaimed Rienau pond area.
My first recommendation would be to use the approve seed mix in the permit, since that has
been very successful in past reclamation efforts at the mine. If the landowner has a strong
desire to use a different mix on this limited area, that may be appropriate. The submittal
includes "bluestem". It is not clear which bluestem is intended to be used. However, both
big and little bluestem (Andropogon gerardi and Schizachyrium scoparius) are warm season
grasses adapted to sandy soils on [he plains. Their chance of success at the Meeker Mine
site is questionable, at best.
Also, using the proposed species and rates without the bluestem, Enron would be putting
out 164 seeds per square foot. We typically recommend seed rates of about 40 seeds per
square foot for critical area plantings, based on NRCS recommendations.
c:\wp51\110196
