BMRI Response
CDMG 3/28/01 Correspondence
May 2, 2001
Page 2
Total Mercury 0.00025 mg/l
Selenium 0.01 mg/[
Silver 0.0002 rng/[
Zinc 0.05 mg/[
Metals and WAD Cyanide must be analyzed by methods capable of producing calculated
method detection limits equal to or less than the values listed above. "
Since the CDPS permit is the most recent per•.nit issued and pro'uably the most restrictive
in terms of compliance criteria (i.e., drinking water criteria, aquatic criteria, State of
Colorado antidegradation criteria), the above referenced lowest MDL's were used for
purposes of establishing the lowest MDL's required under a BMRI contract with a
bidding laboratory. Therefore, the lowest MDL's required in a BMRI/Silver Valley
Laboratories, Inc contract is as follows for those constituents of concern listed in your
correspondence:
Cadmium 0.0003 mg/I
Lead 0.005 mg/1
Silver 0.0002 mg/1
If the BMRI lowest MDL rationale presented above or if the present lowest MDL's listed
in the December 8, 2000 CDPS permit is incorrect, I would like the opportunity to
discuss concerns the Division might have. With regards to the other concerns identified
in your correspondence, BMRI will ensure an updated certificate will be prpvided to the
Division by October 1, 2001 or in the event a new laboratory certificate is pot received by
that date, BMRI will discontinue using SVL and will retain the services of a laboratory
with a current laboratory certification until such time a new certification is deceived from
SVL.
With regards to shipping and holding time concerns BMRI must adhere to [he conditions
contained in TR-O6 and TR-15. SVL will be required to test and record on the Chain-of-
Custody sheet the temperature of samples at the time of receiving the samples at [he
laboratory. I believe the chilled temperature is 4 degrees Celsius not Fahrepheit as listed
in the correspondence. With regards to holding times, the only constituent of concern I
believe is Nitrite that has a holding time of 48-hours. To ensure samples requiring Nitrite
analysis are received and analyzed within the holding time limitations, samples will be
collected and shipped via UPS next day delivery. Should BMRI determine these samples
can not be shipped, received, and analyzed within the specified holding time limitations,
BMRI will utilize a local laboratory for those analyses. In the event any simples are not
received in a chilled state complying with the specific permit conditions or exceed the
holding time limitations, BMRI will use the TR-15 Quality Assurance/
