~ ~
would resemble those encountered on mixed mountain shrub communities dominated
by chokecherry, serviceberry and sagebrush. To support this statement, the
following shrub composition data is presented showing the differences between
two sites where the topsoil has been live-handled ono an undisturbed mountain
shrub community.
PERCENT SHRUB COMPOSITION
UNDISTURBED MIXED
SPECIES RECLAIMED SITE 1 RECLAIMED SITE 2 MOUNTAIN SHRUB
Servicetrerry 8.4 5.5 8.4
Silver Sage 0.8 0.4 -
Big Sagebrush 6.7 6.8 9.3
Rabbitbrush - 0.4 4.1
Aspen 0.8 4.2 -
Chokecherry 12.8 1.1 2.4
Oak - - 20.6
Currant 0.8 - 0.4
Woods Rose 2.5 3.O 0.7
Snowberry 67.2 78.6 54.1
While all parameters of these sites are not yet equal, it is very
encouraging that the composition of the reclaimed communities are very similar
to that of the undisturbed mountain shrub type. These data clearly show that
the reclaimed sites are similar to undisturbed mixed mountain shrub communities.
The concerns aver a grass dominated stand are not appropriate and the reclaimed
community will look similar to other native habitats in this area.
17
r~k:s ..
