December 21, 1995

RIO GRANDE COUNTY ROAD DEPT.
P.O. BOX 46 MONTE VISTA, CO 81144 852-4781
DEL NORTE GRAVEL PIT M-78-071
CORRECTIVE ACTION •1, PARAGRAPft 3
The fuel farm located in the southwest corner of the pit is
inactive and proposed to be closed and abandoned. It should be
noted that the fuel farm is in a diked compound with a synthetic
liner able to accommodate 110X of the largest tank.
The location of the hot plant is in the southeast corner of the
property. There is currently a large dike (min. 3') that
borders the south property line, stockpiles along the east
boundary, and a reject gravel pile along the northwest side of
the plant. The entire plant area sets in a depressed area and
is surrounded by earthen dikes with the exception of the access
road on the southwest side of the plant. Historically the
natural flow is from southwest to northwest, therefore flowing
away from the pit area. To protect the pit a dike can be
constructed across the access road and make a complete
enclosure.
In the event of an accidental spill, all material would be
contained within diked area approximately 125,000 sf.
Because of the type of oil products used, (AC and MC asphalt)
spilled products would have mininal ground penetration. AC
products would be 1 inch or less and MC products would be 3
inches or less.
Clean up would consist of blending spilled product with
available gravel at the hot plant site. Then the material could
be stockpiled for future roadbed use.
Clean up would be done by Rio GrandeCounty forces.
It should be noted that no spill event has occurred at this
facility.
Res ully s~itted,
Patrick SUllivan C.E.T.
