grain size. The material was then combined to meet the following specific grain-size
distribution outlined in the request for testing and shown below:
Sieve size::.::: ::Percent Passin .
1.0 inch 100
318 inch 40-70
N4 5-55
N200 0-10
The Soil Liner Fill material was processed by passing the bulk material through a li4
sieve, moistening to approximately optimum moisture content and allowed to cure
overnight.
1.2 Geosynthetic Materials
One type of geomembrane material was submitted to Golder for use in the testing
process. The type of geomembrane was linear low density polyethylene (I.LDPE). The
specifics are shown below for the product:
Geos nth .
,F,... . .
100 mil LLDPE Textured surface on one side.
2.0 Test Apparatus
The apparatus used in for this test consists of a 10 inch inside diameter steel tube,
approximately 18 inches in height. A series of pictures showing the testing cell at
various stages of assembly is shown in Figures la and lb. The cell is attached to the
base plate with clamps while the tie-down rods anchored to the cell base plate extend
upward to allow the reaction force to be applied to the sample against the top plate. A
porous loading plate is placed in contact with the upper drainage material and a
hydraulic jack used to apply the force to the sample against the top plate. A digital
pressure transducer is used to monitor the applied load and dial gauges measure
deformation. The load from the hydraulic jack is adjusted to maintain the desired
loading stress throughout the test.
