"C" SEAM EXPLORATION MINE BOUNDARY REVISION
MINOR REVISION APPLICATION
Powderhorn Coal Company is submitting this application to revise its "C" Seam Exploration Mine
boundary to allow mains to be turned to the northwest off the First North Mains in the "C" Seam
instead of extending the exploration mine only in a northerly direction. The First North Mains
would be extended to crosscut 12, approximately 800 feet, instead of crosscut 17 approximately
1200 feet, as approved in Minor Revsion 31. The remaining 400 feet of the exploration mine area
would be used to turn the northwest mains in the "C" seam to set up the mine conveyor, road way
and ventilation systems to allow long term mining in the "C" Seam.
This exploration mine boundary revision is being requested to expedite the development work
required to begin mining the "C" seam as shown on Exhibit 5-C-1 because the quality of the'B"
seam has deteriorated significantly. The faces of the `B" seam in 2nd West have a high
percentage of rock in the coal horizon making the mining of the `B" seam economically marginal.
To date, the "C" seam quality has been significantly better than the `B" seam thereby allowing
more run of mine coal to be shipped duectly to the PSCO. The limited spar that has been
encountered to date has been cut by the miners with little difficulty. The roof conditions have
been poor but are beginning to improve as more azea is opened up. This trend is expected to
continue as development extends to the north. Based on preliminary mining in the "C" Seam,
Powderhorn Coal Company anticipates the "C" seam represems the future of the Roadside North
Mine.
