i' Grand !unction Pipc
Surficial Geology Investigation, Bean Ranch Road, Gravel Pi[, 1Yhitewater, CO
Februan IR,199R Page3
' drainage to this site but, ma} accept some drainage from this site. The site is not located within mapped or
suspated Good plains. The flood plains of Indian Creek to the south and Kannah Creek to the north are between
RO to IGO feet below the elevation of this tract.
t ECONOMIC GEOLOGIC DEPOSITS
' Thc significant ewnomic deposit on this site is the alluvial gravels and cobbles. Portions of this ridge have been
mined in the past, most notably in conjunction with construction of US Highway 50 and the DOE Mill Tailings
Hall Road to Cheney Reservoir disposal site.
' No other knovvm, economic deposits of petroleum, other potential quarry type rocks or minerals are known to
exist in this arcs.
' GEOLOGIC HAZARDS
In general, this sift in itself does not appear to contain any goologic htverds. Thc underlying clays of the Mancos
' Shale Formation exhibit expansive characteristics but, such expansive characteristics should not atPect the gravel
extraction operation.
I' Thc side slopes off of this ridge, to the north and south are moderately steep. These side slopes are complicated
by the Smith Ditch which is an unlined imgation ditch. This unlined imgation ditch is in useprimarily in the
spring and early summer months. Numerous areas of soil creep and slope failure complex features are evident
' on the north slope. bclrnv this proposed gravel extraction pit. Lessprominent slope failure feotures ere present
on the south facing slope, overlooking Indian Creek. [n its self, the gravel extraction operation on this property
should not a(Tcet the stability of these slopes, either in n positive or negative manner. The primary mechanism
' affecting these slope failures is the leakage, whether intentional or unintentional, from Smith Ditch. It is
rewmmended that high banks or slopes not be constructed or allowed to remain immediately above Smith Ditch.
It would be advantageous, near the end of the gravel extracting operation, to cut back any banks on the north,
west and cast sides of the proposed gravel pit. The purpose of cutting Ihcsc banks back would be to, vvhcre
' possible, remove the vvcight of the grace) and soil from above the ditch, aiding in stability of these slopes.
1
1
1
1
