<br /> <br />In irrigated areas, the primary concerns of management are controlling <br />erosion by water, maintaining the organic matter content and fertility of <br />[he surface layer, and proper use of irrigation water. Incorporating crop <br />residues Snto the surface will improve water infiltration, tilth, help <br />prevent soil erosion, and help maintain adequate organic matter levels in <br />the surface layer. Realignment of ditches and irrigation structures are <br />needed in some areas for a more uniform distribution of irrigation water. <br />Irrigation methods suitable for this soil are furrows, corrugations, <br />and sprii,4lers. Furrow irrigation Ss best suited to row crops. Furrows <br />should run across the slope. Sprinkler irrigation is well suited [o most <br />ccops. Use of this method permits the even, controlled application of <br />water, reduces runoff, and minimizes the risk of erosion. Corrugations are <br />suitable for alfalfa, pasture, and small grains. Regardless of [he <br />irrigation method used, water must be applied carefully to prevent runoff <br />and control erosion. <br />Returning all crop residue [o [he soil and using a cropping system that <br />includes grasses, legumes, or grass-legume mixtures help to maintain <br />fertility and tilth. The use of commercial fertilizers helps maintain soil <br />fertility. Crain and grasses respond to nitrogen fertilizer and legumes <br />respond to phosphorus. <br />In nonirrigated cropland areas, management is needed to conserve <br />moisture, control soil erosion, and [o maintain productivity of the soil. <br />Stubble mulch tillage, and incorporating crop residues in and on [he surface <br />are essential to reduce runoff and erosion and to conserve moisture. <br />Chiseling or subsoiling are effective in breaking up tillage pans and <br />improving water penetration. Tillage operations should be kept to a <br />minimum. Diversions and greased waterways may be needed. They help prevent <br />gully erosion. <br />
