NOTICE
OF
PROPOSED BACKFILL ACTIVITY
Pursuant to the Construction Materials Rules and Regulations, 3.1.5(9) of
the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board, the Town of Crested Butte,
owner of the Mountain View Pit, Permit No. M-81-002, requests
permission to backfill at its pit site with off-site inert material:
(a) The Town of Crested Butte is planning to excavate material from its
ice rink site within town and transport the excavated material to our
pit site. The ice rink is located on coke ash remains from previous
coal mining and coke manufacturing processes. The coke ash and
some brick and rock from the old coke ovens must be removed prior
to construction of a new concrete ice rink.
The Town's engineers are concerned about the structural capacity of
the coke ash material. However, many of the Town's paved streets
are constructed upon the same material.
(b) Approximately 1200 cubic yards will be backFilled at the south end
of the pit and covered with material from the pit.
(c) Affidavit certifying material as clean and inert is attached.
(d) The time frame for the backfill project is June 19 to July 1, 2001.
(e) The backfill project will not alter the post-mining configuration of
the site.
(f) The Town does not have a general engineering plan regarding
settling and voids. However, the material has been in its current
location for approximately 70 years. Although it does not lend itself
to compaction for structural purposes, it does not seem to settle
significantly after placement.
Respe tfully sub fitted,
VJ V ~
Town of Cr ted Butte, Colorado
William V. rank, Town Manager
- S
. ~~\
~~~'_
