of 1998. This supports statements that migration of sulfate and manganese is
occurring from the West Pit. What is not known is how concentrations of other
constituents vary. This information should be presented.
.It is our understanding that reclamation of the West Pit and East Pit is currently
occurring. The possibility exists that soil used for reclamation purposes is also
causing sulfate and manganese pollution problems addressed in the BMRII report.
Without continuous monitoring of the Rito Seco fora[ least TSS, TDS, pH,
conductivity, sulfate, and manganese, it will not be possible to determine whether the
reclamation plan is successful in preventing pollution of the stream.
.The BMRI report stresses problems associated with the West Pi[. Are there any similar
problems associated with the East Pit?
.Does the reclamation plan address how the haul road, leaching ponds and other disturbed
lands will be established in vegetation? What kind of monitoring plan is being
implemented to ensure the reclantation plan is successful?
.It is our understanding that significant erosion is occurring along the haul road. If this is
the case, what is being done to stabilize these areas?
.I[ is our understanding that wind borne particles are periodically blown off the treatment
pond residues. Are these particles causing pollution problems? Also, how will the
pond residues be stabilized and vegetation established?
.If the enhanced evaporation technique is used to treat water from the Wes[ Pit, will
sufficient water rights exist for augmentation of the Rito Seco?
Please call if additional information and/or comments aze required.
