Methane Monitoring Drill Hole
Deaz Sir or Madam:
The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33, Section 116,
Paragraph 4, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on August 13, 2001, an application to revise coal mining
operations at the Bowie Mine No. 1 was considered complete for the purposes of filing. The revision was
submitted by Bowie Resources Limited. All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and the
Regulations initiate from this date of filing.
Approval of this revision would permit the drilling of one methane monitoring drill hole and the construction of its
associated light use road. The monitoring hole location is in the vicinity of the west mine and will be used to
monitor the pressure within [he Bowie No. 1 mine underground workings. The proposed drill pad and road are
located on Bureau of Land Management land within Federal Coal Lease C-37210, in Sections 15, 22, and 23 of
T13S, R92W. The 6 inch diameter drill hole will be approximately 770 feet deep. The light use road will be 16
feet wide and 2300 feet in length. The total disturbance of the drill pad and road will be about 1.2 acres, with silt
fence being utilized for sediment control. The drill hole and the road will be reclaimed after use.
The Underground coal mining operation is on land located approximately 3 miles Notch of Paonia, Colorado. The
permit area is further described as follows:
Portions of Sections 1, 2, 3, 10-15, 22-25, Township 13 South, Range 92 West of the 6th P.M.
Portions of Sections 5-8, 17-19, 29-32, Township 13 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
The above-mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle maps of Bowie & Gray Reservoir.
Because the above referenced technical revision application would incorporate additional lands into the permit
azea or might otherwise alter previously approved permit conditions or mitigation measures, we are requesting
your agency's evaluation of the potential for impacts to threatened or endangered species of plants or animals, or
wildlife species otherwise protected by federal law.
In order for us to approve this revision, we are required to make a fmding that "the activities would not affect the
continued existence of endangered or threatened species or result in the destmction or adverse modification of
their critical habitats as determined under the Endangered Species Act of 1973...." We request your review and
