TES and BLMSensilive Species Survey Report-Oxbow Elk Creek Mine £xplormion Project
GVB-LW03-02 is located on Oxbow property. Table 1 provides the legal description of the well
sites located on BLM lands. Access roads to these locations will spur from existing roads and
are proposed as part of this development. The proposed well sites and access roads would be
constructed on BLM lands.
SITE DESCRIPTION
The approximate elevations for the proposed well sites and road improvements range between
6,200 and 8,200 feet. The land within the project area is chazacterized by grassy clearings
surrounded by dense scrub oak vegetation and steep hillsides with pinyon juniper woodlands,
aspen, Douglas ftr, ponderosa pine forest. The azea proposed for the well sites and access roads
are currently grazed by sheep.
LISTED SPECIES
The purpose of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is to conserve the ecosystems upon which
TES depend and to conserve and recover listed species. Under the law, species may be listed as
either endangered or threatened. An endangered species is one that is in danger of extinction
within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A threatened
species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a
significant portion of its range. Candidate species are those that have been studied and that the
United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) concluded should be proposed for listing as
endangered or threatened.
The FWS has identified 10 federally-listed threatened, endangered, or candidate species for
listing that may occur in Gunnison County, and 12 federally listed species that may occur in
Delta County (USFWS, 2004x). Table 2 identifies these species and their federal status.
Table 2 Federally-Listed Species Potentially Occurring in the Project Area
Common Name Scientific Name County `Status ,: ' ~
Bald ea le Haliaeetus leucoce halus Delta, Gunnison Threatened
Gunnison sa e- rouse Centrocercus minimus Delta, Gunnison Candidate
Yellow-billed Cuckoo Cocc zus americanus Delta, Gunnison Candidate
Black-footed ferret Mustela ni ri es Della Threatened
Canada 1 x L nx Canadensis Delta, Gunnison Threatened
Boreal toad Bu o Koreas boreas Delta, Gunnison Candidate
Bon ail chub Gila ele ans Delta, Gunnison Endan ered
Hum back chub Gila c ha Delta, Gunnison Endan ered
Colorado ikeminnow Ptychocheilus /ucius Delta, Gunnison Endan ered
Razorback sucker X rauchen texanus Della, Gunnison Endan ered
Uinta Basin hookless cactus Sclerocactus laucus Delta Threatened
Cla -lovin wild buckwheat Erio onum elino hilum Delta Endan ered
Uncom~ah re fritilla butterfl Boloria acrocnema Gunnison Endan ered
OxWw Elk Creek Mine ExpansionA Kn rES and Sensitive Sp¢iu survey 2
