Mining Plan
• Exhibit D
Mining Plan
SITE DESCRIPTION
Location and general description: The Pikeview Quarry is located on a mountainside
northwest of Colorado Springs. The city limit extends through the eastern side of the permit.
However, no mining occurs within the city limit. All mining occurs on land in EI Paso County.
The operation has a mean elevation of about 7400' with a range of about 7000' to 7800'.
Relationship to surrounding areas: Surrounding lands have undergone tremendous
development in the last 10 to 15 years. Most of this development is residential and mainly in
the Oak Valley Ranch development. This housing development is located a short distance east
of the quarry. There is a narrow section of undeveloped land between the most easterly permit
boundary and the development, but that land could be developed in the near future.
Although the presence of a major housing development near a major rock quarry seems
a land use conflict, few problems have occurred. The quarry does not present any hazard to the
housing development as the distance between the mining area and the housing is much too great
to cause any problems.
Land to the north, south and west of the quarry is natural land that is very mountainous
wildlife habitat. The quarry sits on the boundary between the natural land to the west and the
urban land to the east.
The primary impact of the operation on surrounding lands is a visual impact. The
operation is highly visible from not only nearby but also from rather great distances to the east.
However, this high visual impact is primarily the result of Colorado Springs expanding to the
north. The visual characteristics, except fine texture, has changed very little since Castle
Concrete took over their operations in 1969.
Mining History of the Site: No records exist as to when the first mining occurred on this
site, but it apparently was in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Initially the primary use of the site
was to produce dusting lime that was used in the many underground coal mines operated east of
this site in the early 1900's. Apparently, lime for agricultural purposes was also produced. A
lime kiln was present on the site at one time.
Pikeview quarry Amendment Exhibit D Page 1
