•
May 3, 1989
Governor Roy Romer
State Captiol Building
Denver, Colorado 80203
I am writing to ask you to develop a policy that allows citizens of
a city to have some input to the location, development and reclamation
of strip mines.
E1 Paso County has several strip mines on the front range which have
a great impact to the cities of Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and
towns along Ute Pass. These mines have a large negative impact on our
cities air quality, public safety, recreational assets, scenic beauty
and wildlife habitat.
These mines are costing the cities a great deal more than the profits
to the mine holding companies could cover. The very few jobs that these
mines provide to our area do not out weigh the cost these mines are
incuring from the manner of their development and reclamation.
I am attaching a letter sent to the Mined Land Reclamation Board concerning
the admendment to the Snyder Quarry and how it will impact our area.
Citizens of the cities impacted by the mines should have a say in their
licensing and use. I look forward to hearing from you on your position
and proposed policy for this issue.
Sincerely,
~~ ~. ~~~
Dana L. Okamoto
4930 Granby Circle
Colorado Springs, CO 80919
-------------------
Attachment follows:
May 3, 1989
Mined Land Reclamation Board
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Attn: Dan Hernandez
I am protesting the amendment to the Snyder Quarry in E1 Paso County.
I am convinced that this amendment will negatively impact the air
quality, public safety, recreational assets, scenic beauty and wildlife
habitat of E1 Paso County.
The quarry will negatively impact the air quality of the area with increase
of dust from blasting, errosion and truck traffic. The trucks themselves
will contribute to the air pollution of the area. Diesel soot contributes
to many cities being perceived as grimy and is already in evidence in
Colorado Springs.
• III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
