62/,2.7/1997 09:67
7193823242
Coolinj Tower Water Treatment
NIXON POWER P~T
There are several chemicals we add to the cooling tower to control pH, scale, corrosion, and
bacteris/algae gowth. These are listed below.
PAGE 62
Scale!Corrosion comrol: A proprietary blend from Calgon Cotp. consisting of a copolymer of sulfonic
acid and acryie acid, a diphosphonic acid, and polyphosphate. The blend is maintained at a concentration
of about 1l>0 ppm in the tower water ,
H n r L Sulfuric acid is fed to the cooling tower to maintain a pH of 7.2 to 7.6. :~ ~ ~ `
Cowper Corrision Control: The corrosion inhibitor above works well on steels, but not as well in ;, ~ ; (%ii'~
protecting the copper and copper alloy in the plant from corrosion. We therefore feed an additional o,:.t ct.r
product to inhibit copper corrosion. This is a proprietary product consisting of a mixture of a ~ ~
mercaptobenzothiazole and a tolytriazole. The concentration of this product is maintained at 4 ppm in
our cooling towers.
Bi~ide Control: The primary biological treatment in the cooling tower is designed to control the ~' ~ i> OS
bacteria. We currently continuously feed chlorine to maintain a free residual chlorine concentration of ~~'~-t
about 0.3 - 0,4 ppm. During the summer months we occasionally us an algaecide in the towers. We
currently use a product consisting of cyanoc~ithioimidocarbonate and methyldithiocarbamate. as a dose of
10 ppm.
