The bottom land north and west of this ridge and permitted azea is
ircigated farmland. Surface drainage across the permitted azea is generally southeast to
northwest.
Prior to any historical mining "seep" ditches were constructed at the north and south toes
of this ridge and are stratigraphically well below the ground deposit. These ditches
caught and controlled any seep water which periodically occurred as determined by
seasonal and/or annual precipitation or up-country irrigation.
The limited "seeps" are associated with the less permeable shale formation below the
gravel deposit. Curcent mining has encountered "damp" azeas below the deposit and as
such, this permit application includes the general ground water control plan described
below:
If ground water is encountered, the potential flow rate will be determined and then one or
more of the following control structures will be installed. The exact size and capacities
of each structure will be determined by the magnitude of the observed flow rate and its
location within the mining azea.
1. A collection ditch(s) of sufficient size will be constructed to intercept the
seep water, drain the working area, and divert the flow to a settlement basin.
2. A small settlement basin will be constructed within the permit area
downstream from the emerging water. The basin will be designed to retain the
calculated flow long enough to settle any suspended fines and reduce the water
turbidity (if any) to acceptable levels. The basin will either overflow into one of
the pre-existing "seep" ditches discussed below or allow the water to dissipate
through evaporation and/or percolation back into the producing formation.
3. If any water testing becomes necessary to assure and validate the naturally
existing water quality of the water effluent, such a program would be initiated
and that time.
-19-
