• -17- .
' Cut and fill slopes should be revegetated or protected
against erosion by other means. In general, revegetation of
slopes steeper than about 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical will be
difficult. To help revegetate very steep cut and fill slopes a
geogrid or mesh to help the root system of the vegetation begin
can be used. In addition to revegetation to help prevent
erosion, surface water should not be allowed to discharge uncon-
trolled onto the cut and fill slopes. Uncontrolled runoff can be
prevented by use of ditches at the tops of slopes and lined or
riprap ditches on the slopes to handle discharge down the slopes,
Surface water should not be allowed to pond within 10 feet of
buildings or structures. Moisture imfiltration could adversely
impact foundation and floor slat: members. Perimeter backfill
should be compacted to the job specifications and have a surface
slope of at least 5~ (non-paved areas) away from structures,
Vegetation requiring regular watering should not be located
within 10 feet of the building perimeter.
BUILDING AND SITE MAINTENANCE
Proper building and site maintenance becomes the owner's
responsibility after completion of the construction. A preven-
five maintenance program should be established for certain
geotechnical aspects of the surface facility site. The mainte-
nance program should identify and correct problems related to;
1) Poor surface drainage; 2) Swelling or setCling soils; 3) Slope
erosion and 4) Instability of graded slopes.
Chen & Associates
