• -g-
head permeability tests were conducted on relatively undisturbed
samples of the subsoils.
The swell-consolidation tests •.+ere conducted to determine the
compression or expansion charact~:ristics of the samples under
loading and when subrtierged in water. The direct shear tests were
conducted to irtermine shear strength parameters of the soil
sample. The permeability tests were conducted on samples of the
subsoils taken in the proposed sedimentation pond area to help
evaluate infiltration rate. Chemical testing was performed on
samples to determine tl~e percentage of water soluble sulfates.
Results of the laboratory testing program are shown on
Figs. 6 through 19 and in the attached Summary of Laboratory Test
Results, Table I. The laboratory testing was conducted in
general accordance with applicable ASTt•1 standards.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
The subsoils encountered at ttie site are somewhat erratic
with respect to type, depth and engineering characteristics, The
subsoils are predominantly alluvial fan deposits consisting of
sandy clays and clayey sands with varying gravel, cobble and
boulder content and clayey to silty sands and gravels with
cobbles and boulders. The alluvial fan deposits were encountered
to the maximum depth explored of ']1 feet. Consistency or density
of the soils ranged Crom medium dense to dense for the granular
zones and stiff to hard for ttie clay zones. In the lower part of
the site, Holes 10 and 71, stiff to very stiff gravelly clays
were encountered. No free water was encountered in the explora-
Chen & Associates
