_z_
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF STUDY
This report presents tl'~e results of a subsurface study for
design of foundations and general grading at the New Castle
Energy Corporation Mine site, about two miles east of New Castle
in Garfield County, Colorado. A grading plan of the proposed
development as provided by Schmueser & Associates, Inc., is shown
on Fig. 1. Chen and Associates, Inc., previously conducted a
preliminary geotechnical investigation for proposed surface mine
facilities in the same general area as the current study which
included field mapping oC the surface geologic cenditions and
exploratory boring drilling. The report was submitted to Dravo
Corporation dated Nover.~ber 10, 1983, Job Pfo. 25,999• The find-
ings of the previous report have been used to supplement this
report where deemed appropriate.
A field exF;eration program consisting of exploratory borings
was conducted to obtain information on subsurface conditions.
Samples obtained during the field exploration were tested in the
laboratory to determine the classification and engineering char-
acteristics of the on-site soils. The results of the field
exploration and laboratory testing were analyzed to develop
recommendations for foundation types, depths and allowable pres-
sures in the dewatering building and thickener site. The data
was also analyzed to provide general comments regarding grading
and surface drainage. The results of the field exploration and
the laboratory testing program are presented herein.
This report has been prepared to summarize the data obtained
during this study and to present our conclusions and recommenda-
Chen &r~ssociatcs
