South Permit Boundary
Bowie #2 Mine
Paonla, Colorado
PROJECT NO. 24004
Figure 3 -Site location, subject slope, looking northwest
~J
We did not note any portion of the slope which showed evidence of past rockfall
events. The outcropping sandstone unit shows some evidence of potential future
rockfall, although the frequency of rockfall from this area is low as evidenced by
the existing, undisturbed vegetation.
GEOLOGY
The geology at and surrounding the site includes the Bowie Shale Member (680
to 1,000 feet thick) and the Paonia Shale Member (560 feet thick) of the Williams
Fork Formation, which are major coal producing units of the Upper Cretaceous
age Mesaverde Group. Above the mine area is the unnamed, upper Williams
Fork Formation, which is 2,000 to 4,000 feet thick and is comprised of cliff
forming sandstone and conglomerate, and slope forming siltstone and shale.
Geological hazards from these formations include landslide, debris flow and
rockfall.
a
